Aluminium windows are known for their durability, but simple maintenance makes the difference between a window that works well for decades and one that loses its seal after a few years. And much of that durability starts inside the profile, in the corner fittings and T-joints.
What you don’t see: fittings and joints
Corner fittings and T-joints are hidden inside the profile chambers, but they are what keeps the window square. When they are well chosen and correctly assembled, they need no maintenance. That is why it pays to choose precision aluminium parts and stainless steel screws from the start, as they do not corrode in contact with aluminium.
Recommended maintenance routine
- Cleaning the profiles: warm water and neutral soap, with no abrasive products or solvents that could damage the finish.
- Drainage: check that the water drainage holes are not blocked, especially before winter.
- Seals: make sure the weather seals are not cracked or coming loose.
- Hardware: lubricate hinges and locking mechanisms as recommended by the manufacturer.
Warning signs
If a sash rubs when closing, if play appears in the corners or if the frame is no longer square, there may be an assembly problem or an unsuitable part. In that case, have the window checked by a professional.
